Band Entry Rules / Info

COMPETITION RULES

  • All band members, with the exception of one, must be employed by an Ottawa-area technology company/IT-related company or a technology department within an organization or knowledge-based organization.
  • Play rock'n'roll, alternative, R&B
  • Play one original composition, one Canadian cover tune and one other number of your choice.
  • Be prepared to compete in one of the Tech Rocks elimination rounds during October and November, and be available to perform at the Tech Rocks finals.
  • Pay a $200 entry fee if the representing company of the band is an OCRI member, or a $275 entry fee for non-OCRI members. (No entry fee if your company is a sponsor of Tech Rocks.). Eligible companies are subject to confirmation by the Tech Rocks organizer. The band contact person will be contacted regarding payment of the entry fee. Note: all entry fees must be paid prior to the competition.
  • Additional Tech Rocks rules may be incorporated as the event evolves. Any such additions will be posted on the web site.
A panel of up to four judges with musical backgrounds will score each band in the competition. The judging criteria, and their value in terms of the final mark, are as follows:
  • Musicianship: 35%
  • Vocals: 35%
  • Stage show and professionalism: 15%
  • Musical selection (originals and covers): 15%
Members of all Tech Rocks bands will experience the thrill of playing before a capacity crowd at Frank Finnigan's, Corel Centre - and at least 15 minutes of fame among their peers in the tech community! Finals will be held at Barrymore's Music Hall.

All rules must be read by the representatives of the bands in a group prior to registration and again at before the show.
  • order of band appearance is determined by the Tech Rocks band co-ordinator.
  • Every band will have the same amount of time for a sound check.
  • Every band must follow the rules regarding original and cover material.
Bands will play on a Wednesday evening from mid-October to late November, between 7:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m.. A schedule for the playoff round of Tech Rocks will be developed as entries are accepted and finalized. Subject to the number f open slots in the different categories and acceptance by the organizer, entries of eligible bands will be considered on a continuous basis.

Steve's Music will supply stage equipment, including guitar amps, a drum kit and a keyboard. An audio technician/stage manager, sound and lighting will be provided by Wall Sound. Once your entry form has been submitted and all members have been approved by the Tech Rocks administrator, Kathy Mahoney of OCRI kmahoney@ocri.ca, your band co-ordinator will receive confirmation and scheduling information.


Note: all band members must be over the age of 19 years.
